A clean, sharp jab is the foundation of every great boxer. It sets up your power punches, controls the distance, and dictates the pace of the entire round. At Andstill Boxing Club, located at 4541 N Pine Island Rd in Sunrise, FL, we emphasize proper mechanics from your very first session. Whether you are stepping through our doors as a complete beginner or an experienced fighter looking to tighten your fundamentals, mastering this single weapon changes everything.
Led by our active professional coaches, every class at our Sunrise gym includes guaranteed 1-on-1 pad work to ensure your form stays crisp. Below are five fundamental jab drills we use in our daily training to build lightning-fast speed, pinpoint accuracy, and unwavering confidence.
1. The Step-Jab (Distance Control)
The step-jab teaches you to close distance safely without over-committing your weight. Too many beginners lunge forward with their upper body, throwing themselves off balance.
How to Execute:
- Take your standard boxing stance with your weight evenly distributed.
- As you step forward with your lead foot (left foot for orthodox fighters), snap your jab straight out.
- Your rear foot must follow immediately so you maintain your natural stance width the moment your fist lands.
- Retract your hand along the exact same line it went out, returning to a high guard to protect your chin.
Practice this across the length of the gym floor. Focus on keeping your chin tucked and your rear hand glued to your cheek.
2. The Double Jab (Disrupting Rhythm)
Throwing two jabs in rapid succession freezes your opponent’s guard and creates openings for a right cross or a left hook. The key to a successful double jab is speed and recovery.
Drill Breakdown:
- Throw the first jab with standard extension and snap it back halfway—not all the way home.
- Immediately fire the second jab off that halfway point with maximum acceleration.
- Ensure you do not drop your hand between the first and second punch.
Spend three full three-minute rounds on the heavy bag or mitts focusing entirely on doubling up your lead hand without losing your balance.
3. The Double-End Bag Timing Drill
The double-end bag is unforgiving. If your jab isn’t straight, or if you drop your hand afterward, the bag will swing back and clip you. It is the ultimate tool for accuracy and reflex training.
Stand at comfortable range and tap the double-end bag with a steady, metronomic jab. Once you establish a rhythm, vary your timing: throw a slow jab, then two rapid jabs, then step to the side. This trains your eyes to track a moving target and rewards clean technical execution.
4. The High-Low Jab (Changing Levels)
An effective jab doesn’t always target the head. By varying your level, you force your training partner or opponent to divide their attention between upstairs and downstairs.
Drop your knees slightly—never bend at the waist—and snap a quick jab to the body, then immediately fire a second jab to the head. This drill builds leg endurance and teaches you how to create defensive liabilities in sparring or pad work.
5. The Resistance Band Jab (Explosive Speed)
To add real snap to your punches, you need fast-twitch muscle fiber activation. Loop a light resistance band around a secure post behind you, holding the handles in your fists inside your guard.
Slowly step out until there is tension on the band, then throw crisp, isolated jabs against the resistance. Do sets of 10 to 15 reps, focusing entirely on explosive extension. When you step off the band and throw normal punches on the heavy bag, your hands will feel weightless and blindingly fast.
